At Smith Institute, our mission is to help organisations solve their most complex challenges. We use AI, data science, and advanced mathematics to make a positive impact on the economy, society, and the environment. Building, nurturing and supporting our wonderful team is essential for us to continue to support our clients with award-winning solutions.
We are therefore delighted to announce two important appointments that strengthen our leadership and scientific foundations: Professor Dame Alison Etheridge has been appointed as Chair of our Scientific Board, and Paul Miller joins our Board as a Non-Executive Director.
Alison’s appointment signals our continuing commitment to cutting-edge science, and to embedding rigorous, innovative thinking into everything we do. As AI, data science, and the underpinning mathematics and statistics, become even more central to how we tackle our clients’ challenges, we are proud to be guided by one of mathematics' foremost voices.
Professor Dame Alison Etheridge is one of the UK’s most respected mathematical scientists. She is Professor of Probability at the University of Oxford, where she holds a joint appointment in the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics, and is a Fellow of Magdalen College. Her research spans abstract mathematical theory through practical applications, with particular expertise in population genetics and stochastic modelling. Alison was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her services to Mathematical Sciences in January 2025.
She currently serves as President of the Academy for the Mathematical Sciences, leading efforts to position mathematical science at the heart of the UK’s innovation strategy, which has Smith Institute’s full support.
The Scientific Board is a fantastic complement to our technical team, comprising leading figures from top universities and institutions in mathematical sciences and technology. They serve as a sounding board for new ideas, mentor team members, and offer expert guidance on projects. Their involvement also supports our link to cutting-edge models, tools and technologies, enabling us to continue to craft innovative solutions to our clients' most complex challenges.
Paul Miller joins our board as a Non-Executive Director, bringing decades of experience as a pioneering figure in digital transformation. He was the Founder of Digital Workplace Group (DWG), recognised by the Financial Times since 2020 as one of the UK’s top management consultancies in digital transformation. Paul now serves as DWG’s Non-Executive Chairman and supports companies that are committed to delivering innovative, positive change as a board advisor across AI, digital, and professional services.
Paul’s appointment reflects our need to deliver strategic decision intelligence for our clients that is both deeply technical and commercially impactful. His insight will help ensure we remain closely aligned to the challenges facing modern organisations, and the opportunities they can unlock through applied AI and data science.
These appointments mark a powerful next step in our evolution. Professor Dame Alison’s scientific leadership and Paul’s innovative commercial experience will enhance our ability to deliver forward-thinking, data-led solutions that move the dial for our clients. As the world’s challenges grow in complexity, we remain focused on what we do best: helping organisations navigate uncertainty, make better decisions, and shape a smarter, more resilient future.
