With over twenty years’ experience across a wide variety of business sectors, we are experts in optimisation, forecasting, artificial intelligence and algorithm auditing.
Mathematics underpins everything we do because we understand its versatility; we know that its application can boost business and accelerate growth for our clients across society, industry and government.
What we doWe work with a mix of clients and industrial sectors
We offer organisations the agility they need today to make strategic decisions rapidly and with certainty. We investigate core processes to enable our clients to maintain commercial advantage and make decisions with confidence.
Rapid growth in demand for their services prompted Inmarsat to seek an optimisation partner to ensure their satellites remain operating at peak capacity. Smith Institute’s expertise in algorithm design and mathematical optimisation combined with our particular knowledge of the complexities of radio communications spectrum management made us an attractive choice. We worked with Inmarsat to construct and benchmark an optimised series of algorithms that maximise spare capacity responsively and minimise unmet demand, enhancing the customer experience and protecting Inmarsat’s bottom line.
Read case studyLike many analytics companies, Carterwood must strike a careful balance between data utility and individual privacy for their digital platform. They need to share enough meaningful information to be worthwhile for their customers, while ensuring they do not compromise the privacy of the individual sources that contributed the sensitive data.
Read case studyTo better understand graphite changes and to bolster investment and inspection programmes, EDF selected the Smith Institute to develop bespoke software for predicting the future degradation of graphite bricks which lie in the cores of the UK's nuclear reactor fleet.
Read case studyWe used an explainable AI solution to help National Grid ESO potentially save over 300 megawatts of reserve each settlement period (30 minutes) by effectively determining the optimal amount of reserve to hold versus demand.
Read case studyInnovate UK’s Digital Catapult provides funding to help businesses commercialise innovation, explore and test new products and seek expert advice and guidance. It was in the latter capacity that Smith Institute recently supported a grant recipient called Flush-Tech with a solution that can potentially improve the lives of millions of people globally.
Read case studyWe guided a major public transport organisation through the process of adopting a data-led business approach before helping them to build a world-class in-house data science team.
Read case studyEach year, airline and rail companies serve millions of cups of tea, biscuits and sandwiches to passengers. Transport executives know that getting customers their choice of food and beverages at the right time along the journey increases customer satisfaction and reduces the risk of staff abuse. We used machine learning to develop a demand forecasting tool to enable more efficient and effective stock ordering, increasing profitability and reducing waste.
Read case studyBy leveraging our extensive experience in forecasting and mathematical modelling, we are helping NGESO to manage uncertainty and make more economical and secure balancing decisions.
Read case studyWe are collaborating with NGESO on integrating a first version of a modernised dispatch algorithm into the control room and in the development of new functionalities which will enable the transition to zero carbon electricity network operation.
