In addition to the individuals listed below, Dr Robert Leese (Director) and Dr Heather Tewkesbury (Business Development Director) are also members of the Smith Institute's Council.
Dr Bruce Smith is Chairman of the Council of the Smith Institute. Until 1997 he was the Chairman and majority shareholder of Smith System Engineering Limited. Before founding that company in 1971, he worked in design engineering for Decca Radar Limited after a period in the United States with Bellcomm Inc in the US Space programme. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Engineering and Technology and the Institute of Physics. Bruce is Chairman of the Rainbow Seed Fund, Chairman of IP Group PLC, a director of a number of private companies and a Domus Fellow of St Catherine's College, Oxford.
Dr Keith Winters is the Industrial Strategy Coordinator of the KTN for Industrial Mathematics and Chairman of its Industrial Advisory Board. He was previously Chief Technologist at AEA Technology, where he was responsible for initiatives directed at medium to long-term market opportunities, and for strategic relationships with other technology companies and with the science base. He is Vice-President for Industry and Business at the Institute of Physics and a member of NERC's Science and Innovation Strategy Board. Keith is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications.
Dr Bob Whelan was previously a non-executive director of NPL Management Ltd and Director of the Institute for Prospective Technical Studies of the European Commission in Seville. He was founder Director of CEST, the Centre for Exploitation of Science and Technology and was heavily involved with the conception of the Faraday programme and technology foresight. He has 20 years' experience of new product and process development with PA Technology, Cambridge. Bob is currently a member of the Radio Regulations Group of CEPT.
Prof John Ockendon is Director of the Oxford Centre for Collaborative and Applied Mathematics (OCCAM), and Research Director of the Oxford Centre for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. His academic career has been built around mathematics-in-industry, beginning with the first-ever Study Group in 1968. He has been deeply involved in setting up international Study Groups in Australia, Canada, USA, India, China, where he is an Advisory Professor at Fudan University, Shanghai, and elsewhere. Under the aegis of OCCAM, he coordinates a world-wide network of applied mathematics activities. John is a Fellow of St Catherine's College, Oxford and a Fellow of the Royal Society.
Dr Lincoln Wallen is Head of Research and Development at Dreamworks Animation. He was formerly CTO at Electronic Arts Mobile where he was instrumental in shaping EA's approach to the mobile business, which saw EA deliver a strong portfolio of mass market mobile games, as well as games delivering a next-generation consumer experience. Prior to joining EA, Lincoln was with Criterion Software and MathEngine. His early career involved 20 years of professional IT and mathematics research, including two years as BP Venture Research Fellow at the University of Texas at Austin, and latterly as a Reader in Computer Science at the University of Oxford.
Prof Nigel Peake is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Cambridge's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics. His research interests lie in the field of wave motion, especially as applied to problems in acoustics and aerodynamics. Much of his work is sponsored by industry, and has included the development of methods for predicting noise generation by aircraft, the understanding of fluid-structure interaction and flow stability. Nigel is Vice-President of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, serves on various committees of the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Fluid Mechanics.
Prof Colin Please is Chair of the Smith Institute's Scientific Committee. He is Head of the Applied Mathematics group at The University of Southampton. His background includes industrial experience at GEC, CEGB and QEGB and his subsequent academic career has been guided by the continual desire to connect mathematical research, from many sub-disciplines, with practical problems including a wide variety of industrial, environmental and medical applications. Central to this has been active support of international Study Groups in USA, China, Australia and Europe as well as industrial and medical study groups in the UK. He is Vice-President of the UK/IE branch of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
