IT Officer


The Smith Institute uses core expertise in mathematical modelling to bring fresh thinking and new solutions to difficult problems.  We are at the forefront of the industrial and business applications of mathematics, with key client relationships in performance engineering, algorithm design, risk modelling, optimisation and data analytics.

The Institute plans to double in size over the next 5 years and wishes to make this appointment to strengthen the team that manages its IT and computing infrastructure.

Our minimum requirement is for an IT professional with Linux and Windows experience in user management, software management, hardware management and data security, who also has the personal skills needed to work effectively alongside existing staff.  We would particularly like to hear from applicants who can also offer further capability in software engineering, distributed computing or networking.  For the right candidate there will be opportunities to participate in client-facing projects.

It is imperative that the successful applicant live within easy travel distance of our office on the Harwell Innovation Campus (Fermi Avenue, Didcot, Oxfordshire OX11 0QR).  Significant home working will also be expected.

Marketing Assistant

The Smith Institute uses core expertise in mathematical modelling to bring fresh thinking and new solutions to difficult problems.  We are at the forefront of the industrial and business applications of mathematics, with key client relationships in performance engineering, algorithm design, risk modelling, optimisation and data analytics.

The Institute plans to double in size over the next 5 years and wishes to make this appointment to strengthen the team that manages its marketing and communications.

Our minimum requirement is for a professional with excellent communication skills, both written and oral, an eye for detail and experience of working with social media in a professional context. We would like to hear from applicants who have good copywriting and editing skills, and experience of working in a marketing and communications environment. For the right candidate there will be opportunities to develop relevant skills and experience and to help organise and attend client-facing events.

The Smith Institute uses core expertise in mathematical modelling to bring fresh thinking and new solutions to the challenges faced by our clients.  We are at the forefront of the industrial and business applications of mathematics, with key client relationships in performance engineering, algorithm design, risk modelling, optimisation and data analytics.

The Institute is currently looking to expand its diverse and dynamic team, in response to opportunities to grow the use of mathematical sciences in industry and government.

We wish to hear from applicants with excellent track records in modelling, algorithms, data science and computing, coupled to a strong motivation to work on high-value business challenges.  We expect that the strongest candidates will have exceptional academic achievements, including a research degree in some branch of the mathematical or computational sciences. Prior experience of an industrial or business environment is highly desirable.

Successful candidates will also have the personal skills needed to work effectively with the Institute’s clients and partners, including in the UK’s leading universities.  It will be essential to combine a broad technical knowledge with an eye for understanding client requirements and recognising new business opportunities.  All the Institute's staff contribute actively to developing business prospects and creating proposals for new work.

Most of the Institute's staff work for much of the time from home offices and this is an important part of our overall working environment.  It is therefore important that applicants are able to work effectively in this type of distributed structure.
